Colleague Skill Growth Accountability

Something that’s been on my mind lately Is company and employee accountability surrounding training and skill growth. Everyone who knows me knows I like sports analogies. So I think about the very best sports players. Kobe, Tiger, Bo Jackson, Dion, Gretzky, What made them great? Sure, they had great sports teams and teams with great cultures. They also had coaches who made them practice a lot. But these guys didn’t do the minimum! They did extra workouts, extra practices, extra everything!!

When you think about the corporate world, I believe this analogy rings true. Companies need to focus on their culture like the best sports teams do. Also, in regards to skill building, companies must invest in L&D. Having an L&D department with outstanding leadership, a strong group of instructional designers, and a fantastic visual design team is essential. But…. These are mandatory and foundational, and all companies should be doing them.

If you are an employee and you want to be great. These are not enough! You must emulate these great sports players and put in the extra time. Get up early, read a book related to your work versus Netflix, take on an additional project at work to stretch yourself, pay for some online training, or take courses at your local university. You can’t just rely on the company to provide the necessary training. Go the extra mile. Your career will grow, and so will your skills and capabilities. I’m probably going to talk more about this in the days ahead.
